About the Event

Thewa Pendant

Thewa is a traditional art of fusing 23-carat gold with multicolored glass. It originated in India about 400 years ago. Gold is first beaten into thin sheets, then intricate designs are carved and cut out (like a stencil). Glass is treated with a special process to make it glittery, then the gold design is carefully applied to the glass. It is a very time-consuming process. Even today, master craftsmen use red, green, or blue glass as base. Thewa Jewelry is known for its intricate patterns and bright hues  Some pieces are on display at museums worldwide like the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NY and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.

Thewa Necklace is inspired by these ancient techniques and colors.  It features a laser-cut center cabochon and is bezelled with seed beads, pearls, rhinestones, and crystals to make it a showstopper. Several Czech spade beads, drops, and pearls dangle from the bottom for added interest. Rivolis in matching colors are bezelled and added to the rope. The completed necklace is unique and striking.

Length: 18”, not including pendant.

Techniques: CRAW, peyote, and embellishment stitches.

Skill Level: Intermediate and beyond
