Helena Tang-Lim
(aka: The Manek Lady)
Specialty - Bead Weaving
Living in the Far East—a region rich with a vibrant blend of ethnic cultures, races, and religions—shaped Helena’s appreciation for beauty, artistry, and tradition. Within this cultural melting pot, influences from both East and West have created a society that values exquisitely handcrafted fashion and accessories.
Helena’s fascination with the tiny “manek-manek” began in 1995, when she discovered an old pair of antique beaded shoes that were once immensely popular among the Straits Chinese community of the former Malayan Peninsula. She was captivated by the extraordinary detail of the hand beading, created using tiny size 13 charlottes (potong manek), and became determined to learn how such intricate work was done.
Not long afterward, Helena created her very first pair of hand-beaded shoes (kasut manek), inspired by those traditionally worn by Straits Chinese women, known as bibis.
From there, her creative journey continued to grow. After shoes came peyote-woven amulet bags, followed by knitted bags, crocheted bags, accessories, and countless other beadwork creations.
Helena’s dedication to manek-manek is both inspiring and enduring. She welcomes the opportunity to connect with fellow enthusiasts and share in a love of these intricate beadwork traditions.
