Kim Stathis - Trillium

Description

Trillium is a low-growing native woodland three petal wildflower that grows and flower in spring. After flowering, they go dormant and die back to the ground for the summer.  Their blooms can be either showy or obscure, a dazzling display of color on a hillside, or a chance surprise hidden under a leaf. Several species of Trillium contain chemical compounds called sapogenins that have been used medicinally though the ages as astringents, coagulants, expectorants, and uterine stimulants. This is evidenced in common names given to some trilliums such as birthwort and Indian balm.

The Pendant for the Trillium Necklace is made up of three bezeled Marquise Crystals that emulate the basic three petal shape of Trillium flowers. The backs of the bezeled Marquise Crystals are beaded to protect the coating that give the Marquise Crystals their beautiful coloring.  The Necklace Straps are made using a modified Chenille Stitch and embellished with a Pearl Component. The main stitch used to make the bezels for the Marquise Crystals is peyote stitch. Herringbone Stitch is used for the Herringbone Loop that connects the Pendant to the Necklace Strap. The Necklace Strap is a continuous loop without a clasp.

Skill Level – Advanced

This project uses Peyote stitch and Herringbone stitches. Students are expected to know how to do peyote and Herringbone stitches. No experience is needed doing Chenille stitch since this technique will be explained in the instruction manual.
